Putin 'will be dead by October': Only Russian politician to vote against Ukraine war says Vladimir will be killed before his birthday due to growing concern over failed invasion
Vladimir Putin will be killed by Kremlin insiders by October, an exiled opposition politician has claimed.
Ilya Ponomarev, the only member of Russian parliament to vote against the annexation of Crimea in 2014, believes waning support and fear over a potential war crimes trial could mean the despot is murdered this year by his inner circle.
The politician was a member of the State Duma from 2007 to 2016 but now lives in Ukraine, where he is leading a new movement that he hopes will transform Russia into a modern democracy. He told Newsweek: 'Putin's power resides in his position as an alpha male, as the person who is invincible. 2022 was the year when this position started to wane. My forecast still remains that he will not see his next birthday. 'My personal dream obviously is to see him in The Hague but I don't think that he will make it.
'Those around him will not allow him to go to the Hague, because his testimony may actually be very harmful for them. He will be killed.'
Russia has been accused of 'systemic' war crimes in Ukraine by US ambassador-at-large for global criminal justice Beth Van Schaack.
Targeted attacks on civilians, the use of rape as a weapon of war, the abduction of children and summary executions could all constitute war crimes.
Moscow's actions could be classified as 'crimes against humanity' which could be tried in the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Despite calls for the court to act and the mountain of evidence against Putin, there are still no indications the ICC is set to charge the war-mongering tyrant.
Prosecutor Karim Khan has been on the ground in Ukraine collecting enough evidence to ensure proof the crimes have been committed, the ICC said. Source
