Chinese man (23) stabs three daycare children

On Tuesday afternoon, a man attacked several children in  Zurich's District 11, injuring them.

The suspected perpetrator was arrested. Shortly after lunch, panic broke out at Zurich's Berninaplatz. An employee of a municipal daycare center was on her way to lunch and afternoon care with a group of children when a man suddenly attacked the children with a knife! The daycare worker may have prevented something worse from happening with her courageous reaction: she reacted immediately, overpowered the attacker with the help of a passerby – and held the suspected perpetrator until the police arrived. Meanwhile, the children fled to the daycare center not far away. A 23-year-old Chinese man was arrested by the Zurich city police and taken to a police station. One seriously injured boy and two moderately injured boys aged 5 were given first aid by the Zurich Protection & Rescue paramedics and other rescue services and then transported to hospitals.

Daycare worker courageously overpowered attacker

An eyewitness observed the arrest of the suspected perpetrator. He told Blick: "I suddenly heard children screaming, I was really scared. I went to the window and saw two people pushing a man to the ground." A woman pulled the children to the other side of the street. "I didn't see a knife, but the people down on the street were talking about a knife," the witness continued. The arrested man spoke English and apparently had a piece of paper with him. According to Judith Hödl, media spokesperson for the Zurich city police, the young man is now in police custody and is being questioned.

"His son goes to this daycare center"

In the hours following the attack, there were chaotic scenes with worried parents. As a Blick reporter on the scene reported, a father came and ran under the police cordon: "His son goes to this daycare center - we still have no information about what happened and how he is doing. He is panicking and wants to know what is going on," said a colleague of the father. According to the reporter, a task force entered another house shortly before 3 p.m. Shortly afterwards, Blick is able to speak to the man. "I don't know if my son is OK! The police sent me away again. I don't know where my son is, they just told me that he is unharmed, but I can't go to him," he says, visibly upset.

Traces comprehensively secured

Specialists from the Zurich Forensic Institute and the Zurich Institute of Legal Medicine were called in to secure comprehensive evidence. Further investigations are being conducted by the Zurich Cantonal Police and the responsible public prosecutor's office.
