Pope sends prayers for victims of Meron tragedy

Pope Francis expressed sorrow at the tragedy that occurred in Israel over the weekend during his traditional Sunday address.

“With sadness I express my closeness to the people of Israel because of the accident last Friday on Mount Meron, which caused the death of 45 people and numerous injuries,” he told those gathered. “I assure you of my remembrance in prayer for the victims of this tragedy and for their families.”

At least 45 people were killed on Friday in Israel during a crush on Mount Meron at a religious festival marking Lag B’Omer. Israel was observing a national day of mourning on Sunday for the 45 victims, who ranged in age from 9 to 65. The final funerals for the victims were scheduled for Sunday, and 16 people remain hospitalized following the event. Source

At least 23 dead, scores injured after Mexico City Metro overpass collapses onto road

MEXICO CITY — At least 23 people were killed and 79 injured Monday when an overpass collapsed on an elevated Mexico City Metro line, plunging a passenger train toward the avenue below and sending debris plummeting onto the busy roadway. The incident occurred about 10:25 p.m. in the Tláhuac neighborhood in the southeast section of the capital on Metro Line 12, a branch that has long been dogged by complaints of poor construction. “We heard a loud sound like thunder, and then everything came crashing down,” a 22-year-old survivor identified only as Mariana told Mexico’s El Universal newspaper. “There were a lot of people standing and sitting in the [train]. ... We went flying and hit against the roof.” Terrified commuters were trapped inside the twisted train for about 15 minutes until someone managed to break a window, through which the passengers in Mariana’s subway car escaped, she told the newspaper.
