New Jersey priest pleads guilty to child sexual assault during the 1990s after victim calls clergy abuse hotline in first case brought by the state's new task force

A New Jersey priest has pleaded guilty to a child sexual assault dating back almost three decades. The charge against Thomas Ganley, 63, was charged in January, just two days after the victim who was between 14 and 17 years old at the time of the assault had called the state's clergy abuse hotline. Ganley admitted the crime to authorities and has been removed from the priesthood. 'My heart aches for this survivor and all survivors of child sexual abuse,' Diocese of Metuchen Bishop James F. Checchio said in a statement on Monday. The case against Ganley is the first sexual assault case brought by the state's clergy abuse task force, which was established by Attorney General Gurbir Grewal in September.
